That 80's Fashion Look is Almost Over Again

Fashion experts tell us that fashion always evolves in cycles. Public tastes push forward and then loop back around to embrace a nostalgic look of a previous generation. This is the natural way fashion moves through society and, in the first decade of the 2000's, it has been a strongly 1980's look that has inspired many designers and fashion fans alike. In addition to this 80's sense of style, elements from the 70's which saw popularity, once again, during the 1990's, came back for a while, too. These repeating trends are the tradition of fashion which focuses more on current looks each season.

Part of the look that the 70's was about is the concept of women being able to make free choices in the clothing they wore. Having access to tight jeans instead of the loose apparel of the 60's was popular, as were socks. One only needs to think about the days of disco and the craze for bell bottoms to understand how fashion changed at this time. Bikini's, too, began to shrink in size as socially liberated women were able to choose how much of their body they felt like showing off. Hems changed dramatically and free flowing skirts with colorful fabric and empire waists were all the rage. Even then, a bohemian look continued to dominate and that gypsy sense of style has yet to totally fade from Western culture's overall look. Deep red and blacks have been added in recent times to give a loose look, but one that resonates with an appearance of personal power.

Gone are the elements that dominated the fashion world thanks largely to the rise of punk rock and hip hop's embrace of early 80's styles. Sloppy sneakers, neon colours and wild patterns were hallmarks of the 1980's when everything plastic and mass produced was what looks were about. One only needs to picture Madonna during her Lucky Star and Material Girl days to get a sense of what things had begun to look like between 2001 and 2010. Now, however, there is a shift from the bubble gum pop look of that decade to a far more relaxed 70's inspired look, but one which is far more serious today.

After such a long time of seeing the 80's trends be reproduced almost exactly, fashion experts say that the trend will fade now, but when it comes back once again, it will be similar to the way the 70's is inspiring fashion right now. As each cycle is gone over and pushed more deeply into the mass subconscious' collective opinion base, it tends to merge with previous elements. Denim originated long before it rose to fashion prominence in the 1960's and today it is not thought of as impressive, it is simply a common fashion element. This is the destination for 80's fashion elements and it will not be long until we see them again, in a different form.
