Nutria Fur Seeing Fashion Comeback
Fur might not be the biggest fashion going at the moment due to the flack it often receives from certain political groups, but it does appear that it is making something of a comeback now.
What is really different about this latest attempt at fashion fur use is the fact that it is a certain fur coming from a very unusual source: a giant rodent. It turns out, the nutria of South America has made its way up into the wetlands of Louisiana and is really creating bad conditions there by damaging the local flora. In an effort to put a stop to these pests that are wrecking the environment, the US southern state that is home to New Orleans has placed bounties on the creatures. The resulting furs are now being used in a range of fashion products as a way to at least the animals rather than have them go to waste. An event called Nutria-palooza will be taking place that is a fashion show intended to benefit the wetlands and will be serving as not just a fashion show, but an event to educate the public on the effects the nutria are having on one of the United State's most delicate ecosystems.
Some of the designers, such as Cree McCree, are using the teeth of the animals, as well, to create jewelry. Others are coming up with cocktail style wraps similar to those seen in glamorous decades gone by, fur lined wedding dresses and coats for the winter season. Even the band PRIMA PRIMO that is performing at the show will be wearing gangster era attire featuring nutria furs.
