Facebook Founder Seen As Fashion Icon
While it may not seem it at first glance, according to many fashion critics, the movie The Social Network is inherently a fashion film. While actors of the past have displayed the cleaner cut side of business, in The Social Network, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg models a new sartorial standard for Internet moguls. Fashion experts describe this look as utter disregard for personal style. Rather than the classic slicked back hair and expensive tailored suits, the crew in The Social Network instead sport hooded sweatshirts, cargo shorts and sandals, with or without socks. This style was recreated in great detail for the film, with the fashion director of the film hiring researchers so the film represented as close as possible the type of fashion Zuckerberg displayed during his college years.
One of the early scenes in The Social Network is a discussion between the co-founders of Facebook, Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, wherein Saverin is questioning when the website will be finished. Zuckerberg compares the website to fashion, explaining that just like fashion, the site will never be finished. The comedy of the fact that Zuckerberg makes this statement while slouching in poorly fitting jeans and a crumpled shirt as the more fashion conscious Saverin is questioning him is lost on very few, if any people. Ironically, although Zuckerberg appears to be oblivious to fashion, his particular style has become increasingly popular as the more well groomed look of Internet businessmen is seen less often, strange as it may seem to some.
