Council Of Fashion Designers Of America Awards Celebrate The Best In The Industry
Respected fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, the President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, spoke highly of her colleagues while on stage. A small but prestigious group of nominees were assembled, with the winner taking home a modest trophy and plenty of accolades. The winner of the style icon award this year? None other than Lady Gaga. While many have criticized her fashion as being nothing more than fishing for attention, the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards felt differently.
Plenty of celebrities turned out for the event, wearing their most fashionable frocks and striking dramatic poses for the cameras. Lucy Liu showed up in a black asymmetrical number with feathers spilling out onto the floor. Kirsten Dunst was dressed in a rather forgettable manner, in a fitted tuxedo with an emerald green lapel.
As for the award winners, there were plenty of new designers mixed in with old favorites. Prabal Gurung won the Swarovski Award for Womenswear while Marc Jacobs walked away with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Sofia Coppola. Alexander Wang won an award for his fabulous accessories and Michael Bastian won in the menswear design category.
Some have criticized the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards for catering to male designers, but there were a few female winners this year. With Diane von Furstenberg as president, it would be difficult for the group to get away with outward sexism. Maybe at next year's award ceremonies there will be an abundance of women with a few male winners scattered about.
