Acclaimed Rodeo Drive Designer Dies
Bijan Pakzan opened his high fashion boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills back in 1976. Even then he was an outspoken and enigmatic figure. Using catchy slogans, racy billboards and outrageous claims to attract attention, his cutting edge designs helped him to receive critical acclaim. For all of Pakzan's bravado, he was also a consummate professional. He claims to have dressed more than 36 high ranking politicians, but he remained tight lipped and refused to expose all of their identities. His advertising campaigns always featured himself, along with another well known celebrity.
Pakzan's own Beverly Hills store was over the top. Nothing in his boutique was affordable for those that were not well-to-do, and he was proud to say that he owned the most expensive men's wear line on the planet. Even his other products, such as his signature cologne cost more than $1,000 for a few ounces. Although there were many in the fashion industry that were put off by his antics, Pakzan forged his empire through hard work and determination. In addition, he only designed clothes for men, which is something that most designers do not do. His well tailored suits, high profile clientèle and ability to make all things exclusive made him one of the most sought after designers in the country.
At the age of 71, Pakzan passed away in California, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is survived by his three children and two ex-wives. The exact cause of death was not yet known, but it is said that he was ill for quite some time.
